The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Professional Association (LASPA) is a union with over 1,500 sworn members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department who want to make a difference in our community by helping the children of families who live at or below the poverty threshold.
An estimated 350,000 children in Los Angeles County aged 18 and younger, do not have health insurance. Children from poor urban areas, many of whom are members of ethnic minority groups, experience more than twice the normal rate of vision problems. Approximately 85% of academically and behaviorally at-risk children have vision problems that are either undetected or untreated. Without proper vision, these children can lose interest in the classroom, on the athletic field and will be in danger of dropping out of school altogether. Thus starts the vicious cycle of gang recruitment, drugs, crime and becoming a member of the criminal justice system. This cycle repeats when those children have their own children. Tragically, in many cases, this lifestyle leads to premature death.
LASPA wants to slow the cycle and through its Cares For Kids sponsorship drive, our members have partnered with local charitable vision organizations, like Angels For Sight and Vision to Learn. We also work in conjunction with participating school districts throughout Los Angeles County. Our drive provides comprehensive free eye exams and brand new prescription eyeglasses to underprivileged or at-risk children.
Due to the current economic climate, many families are facing financial hardship. The LASPA organization sponsors an “Adopt a Family” program, that provides meals and toys to qualifying families who struggle through the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season.
